Title

Bob Cooper reads "Surf Guide" magazine at Topanga Beach

Description

Bob Cooper (1937-2020) and a friend read together by arundo at Topanga Beach.

Cooper reads an article about himself, "Prophet on a Wave," in the April 1964 issue of "Surf Guide" magazine, in which author Kemp Aaberg celebrates his "Mount Everest beard, radical sandals, spectacular shirts and tunic of a thousand colors." The Bob Cooper Blue Machine signature model, produced in 1967 and early 1968 by Morey-Pope Surfboards, was the only board of the era to feature an asymmetrical fin setup. Cooper never became a professional surfer because he was Mormon and wouldn't compete when the contests were held on Sundays. He appeared in the surf movies "Slippery When Wet" (1958), "Surfing Hollow Days" (1961) , "Strictly Hot" (1964), and "The Californians" (1964).

"Riding on the long lines of Malibu gave so much time that walking the board and trimming in the front third of the board became the new manoeuvre; so did stalling the board so the curl could catch up. One surfer who was exceptionally good at this style was Bob Cooper."
